The series contains material collected by Lady Bird Johnson; the Committee for a More Beautiful Capital; and the fundraising organization, the Society for a More Beautiful National Capital. The papers particularly deal with Mrs. Johnson’s campaign promoting beautification of Washington, D. C., including school beautification projects, flower and tree plantings in the public parks and areas in the Capital, anti-litter and cleanup activities, beautification awards, beautification of Washington, D. C. neighborhoods and of commercial sites, summer work and enrichment programs for teenagers, beautification of Federal buildings, involvement by the National Park Service and the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the campaign to beautify the Capital, and efforts to raise funds for the Committee’s projects. These papers include material related to Mrs. Johnson’s other beautification and conservation efforts, particularly highway beautification. Other topics include the White House Conference on Natural Beauty, the President’s Council on Recreation and Natural Beauty, the Citizen’s Advisory Committee on Recreation and Natural Beauty, the Youth Conference on Natural Beauty, outdoor recreation, air and water pollution, wilderness areas, urban renewal and development in U.S. cities, historical preservation, the Beautification of America commemorative postage stamp, and Mrs. Johnson’s trips highlighting beautification. This series includes transcripts of the meetings of the Committee for a More Beautiful Capital, minutes of meetings of the President’s Council on Recreation and Natural Beauty, reports on beautification activities, agendas, memorandums, correspondence, lists, press releases, newsletters, publications and research materials, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and photographs.

Sharon Francis was born Sharon Anne Fairly on March 17, 1937 near Seattle, Washington to parents David Fairey and Anne Sandquist Fairley. Francis grew up an avid outdoor enthusiast and early in her life joined a citizen conservation group interested in the Cascade Mountains. Francis graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1959 with a degree in political science. Her honors research was on the Wilderness Bill.
